Getting to TARA

TARA (Training and Research Academy) is located in northern India, approximately 500 km (310 miles) above New Delhi, in the town of Sidhbari, within the Kangra district of the state of Himachal Pradesh. We are located at the foothills of the scenic Dhauladhar Range of the Himalayan Mountains, about 9 km (6 miles) away from Dharamsala (locally spelled Dharamshala).

For those traveling from abroad, we recommend that you fly into New Delhi and transit to TARA from there via several options.

By Road
Take a taxi from the New Delhi airport to Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT). A number of overnight buses are available that go directly to Dharamsala. Tickets can be purchased from a counter on the second floor of the terminal. The bus ride will take approximately ten to twelve hours. We recommend the Volvo or TATA Deluxe AC buses, which both have air conditioning and reclining seats. The TATA Regular Deluxe does not have reclining seats but does have air conditioning.

It is recommended to book these tickets at least one day in advance. Approximate pricing is as follows:
Volvo- 1121 rupees ($19)
TATA Deluxe AC- 838 rupees ($14)
TATA Regular Deluxe- 537 rupees ($9)

By Train
Take a train from New Delhi to Pathankot or to Chakki Bank (both in the state of Punjab). Since these are overnight train trips, you will want to book a ticket in sleeper class, AC 3-tier, or above. Sleeper class will cost between 450 and 600 rupees ($8-$10) for a one way ticket, depending on which train service you chose. Likewise, AC 3-tier costs between 700 and 1200 rupees ($12-$20), one way. All prices are approximate.

Both of these train stations are about 3 to 4 hours from TARA by taxi. We can arrange to have you picked up by taxi, which costs approximately 1600 to 2500 rupees. Or, you can take a bus from the Pathankot station to Dharamsala. This bus trip will take about five hours.

By Plane
Take a plane from New Delhi to the Dharamsala-Kangra Gaggal (DHM) Airport. There are one or two flights per day, depending upon the season, and it is about one and a half hours long, costing about 18,000 rupees ($300) for a round trip ticket.

From Gaggal airport, there are buses available to Dharamsala, but a taxi is the easiest option. Take a taxi from the airport to TARA (Jagori Rural Charitable Trust) on Rakkar Road in Sidhbari. This will cost between 500 and 600 rupees ($8-$10).
