Jagori Staff Members Travel to Delhi to Support Government Pension Overhaul
Seven members of Jagori Rural Charitable trust joined about 12,000 demonstrators in New Delhi at the end of September to fight for better access to pensions for all senior citizens in India.
The rally addressed several issues, but the main goals were to advocate an increase in government pensions and to increase access to all senior citizens.
Currently, not all senior citizens in India are entitled to a pension from the government. Those who are considered below the poverty line (BPL) are eligible for a pension, but those who receive slightly more than that amount are not. Moreover, the central government pays pensions of only Rs. 200 per month--much lower than the amount recommended by experts to cover the cost of food.
